For many of its early years in the U.S., Kia was a low-end brand and its cars were often criticized for poor quality, reliability and design. But a brush with bankruptcy and an investment from Hyundai, Kia grew fast, started winning awards, and became a highly desired brand. Sales have increased by three-fold in the US over the last 20 years. Now, it’s one of the most marked up brands in America. Vehicles like the Telluride, Stinger, Sportage, Sorrento and EV6 have become strong sellers and critical darlings. But Kia faces challenges. An EV sales surge in 2022 has given way to an around 30 percent decline in 2023. There are lawsuits from several U.S. cities over stolen vehicles, recalls over fire risks and a snub from the federal government looking to boost American EV manufacturing. Lows Four-cylinder could use a bit more power, boring driving dynamics, exterior styling isn't for everyone. Verdict The new Sportage proves it has what it takes to compete with segment stalwarts and does so with flair. Overview The 2023 Kia Sportage separates itself from the throng of compact crossovers with its extroverted styling. The Kia's unconventional face features a set of alien-looking headlights and a distinct grille design. Its bolder bodywork is also dimensionally bigger than before, which translates to more cargo space and a roomier interior. Inside, the new Sportage is both attractive and packed with tech that includes a massive dash-mounted screen. Motivation comes from a 187-hp four-cylinder, but a hybrid and a plug-in-hybrid are also offered (reviewed separately). Competition is tough from segment stalwarts such as the Mazda CX-5 and the Honda CR-V, but the 2023 Sportage proves it has more to offer than just a wild-looking exterior. What's New for 2023? The Sportage enters a new generation for the 2023 model year and shares its platform, technology, and powertrains with the Hyundai Tucson, which was redesigned for 2022. Pricing and Which One to Buy LX: $27,615 EX: $29,615 X-Line: $32,415 SX: $33,115 SX Prestige: $35,115 X-Pro: $36,615 X-Pro Prestige: $38,415 The mid-range EX appears to offer the most value here, adding desirable features such as the larger 12.3-inch infotainment screen, wireless smartphone charging, and heated front seats. Engine, Transmission, and Performance The Sportage's default powertrain is a 187-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder that mates to an eight-speed automatic transmission and either front- or all-wheel drive. We sampled both the base four-cylinder and the hybrid powertrain during our initial test drive and were more satisfied with the latter than the former. At our test track, the nonhybrid Sportage needed 8.6 seconds to hit 60 mph versus only 7.4 seconds for the hybrid. The Sportage rides on a new platform with a longer wheelbase than the previous generation and ride comfort is improved as a result. The introduction of rugged-looking trims such as the X-Line gives the compact ute an off-road vibe, but the X-Pro actually has some equipment to help tackle the rough stuff. It rides on black 17-inch rims and all-terrain tires, and features a selection of drive modes. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG The Sportage is rated for 25 mpg city and 32 mpg highway when equipped with front-wheel drive; all-wheel drive models are rated for 23 mpg city and 28 mpg highway by the EPA. We haven't yet taken the Sportage on our 75-mph fuel-economy route, but when we do we'll update this story with test results. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo Inside, the Sportage makes an impression with a snazzy design highlighted by a huge digital display on the dashboard and other various eye-catching details. The interior is available in an attractive two-tone color scheme as an option, but if you prefer an all-black cabin that's available too. The center console boasts a rotary shift knob, a push-to-start button, and a myriad of other controls that blend into the piano-black bezel. Thanks to bigger dimensions overall as well as a longer wheelbase, the Sportage has more rear-seat legroom and 40 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back seat. There's also a dual-level cargo floor for even more versatility. Infotainment and Connectivity On the infotainment front, the Sportage comes standard with desirable features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An 8.0-inch infotainment display is standard and all models come with a digital gauge display, too. We'd suggest upgrading to the larger infotainment display, though, which measures 12.3 inches in diameter and provides more connectivity and crisper graphics. There are also neat touch-sensitive controls below the infotainment interface that alternate between the climate system and the stereo. For the latest Kia EV9 pricing and information: 🤍 The Kia EV9 is a big deal being the first non luxury 3-row electric SUV coming to the U.S. market for seating up to 7 passengers, and it moves Kia towards their commitment to become a future leader in sustainable mobility and their goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2045. From the look of the EV9, the future is NOW. It rides on Kia’s E-GMP platform and utilizes Kia’s fourth generation battery technology. Its boxy shape, big wheels, short overhangs, and 7.8 inches of ground clearance give it a brawny look, and the vertical tail lights and digital pattern lighting on the tiger nose grille give it some sci-fi vibes. The EV9’s wheelbase is 7.87 inches longer than the Telluride’s which should translate to some good interior space for occupants. Despite its blockish appearance, the EV9 has a drag coefficient of just 0.28 which is achieved through a 3D sculpted underbody cover, air curtains integrated into the front bumper, and aerodynamic wheels. The EV9 will be offered in rear wheel or all wheel drive. A standard and long range RWD model will be offered with a 76.1 or 99.8 kWh battery and will have 215 and 201 hp respectively. No, that’s not a typo, the model with the bigger battery gets less power but that long range battery is good for up to 300 miles of driving while the smaller standard RWD battery only gets up to 223 miles of range. The Long Range AWD model has the same 99.8 kWh battery with a dual motor setup that delivers 379 horsepower, and 443 lb-ft of max torque. That’ll get the EV9 to sprint from 0-60 in around 5.3 seconds and will have about 270 miles of range. The AWD GT-line model get’s a bump in torque and will have 516 lb-ft. The EV9 will have fast-charging capabilities of up to 218 kW, and 15 minutes of charging can provide up to 148 additional miles, and that fast charge capability can get a 10-80% state of charge in around 25 minutes. If there’s no where to go while charging, you can position the seats in relaxation mode so you can sit back, relax, and watch all the KBB videos you desire. The EV9 will also have an integrated Charging Control Unit which includes vehicle to load functionality. This lets customers use up to 3.68 kW of power from the EV9 to power things from laptops to electric grills. As heavy as the EV9 is, it still has some fun potential as if you were driving a high powered Kia Telluride which is great. If you’re looking to tow with your EV SUV, the max tow rating for the AWD models is 5,000 lbs and for RWD it’s 2,000 lbs. Some standard safety tech on the EV9 will include forward collision avoidance assist, blind spot warning, lane following assist, and Highway Driving Assist. The North American debut of the EV9 will have available advanced Highway Driving Pilot which will support level 3 autonomous driving that will use 15 sensors, including 2 LiDars, and this will give the EV9 a full 360 degree field of view for obstacle and collision avoidance. Keep in mind this system only supports level 3 autonomous driving, but still needs to be approved by the U.S. government. Driving is important but what about the inside? Well, the interior of the EV9 looks and feels great, ingress is easy with wide opening doors, plus there’s plenty of space. Kia’s pledge for sustainability is shown through their use of recycled, bio and sustainable materials throughout the cabin, and the thoughtful use of space and flat floors which is made possible thanks to that longer wheelbase and low mounted battery pack. Along with comfortable seats, there’s also a massage function which could help for those long hauls. There are various storage spots around the cabin, a wireless charger, 12 inch digital gauge cluster and 12 inch infotainment screen, but there’s no available wireless apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, charging won’t be an issue because all 3 rows have USB-C charging outlets. As far as cargo, behind the 3rd row there’s 20.2 cu-ft of space, and with the 2nd and 3rd row folded, cargo volume increases to 81.9 cu-ft. If you’re curious, there is a frunk. There's no exact trim breakdown yet, but great options like 21 inch wheels, 360 degree camera, remote smart park assist, panoramic roof, Meridian sound system, head-up display, and 2nd row captain's chairs will be available options. Those who want the added sense of security that comes with all-wheel drive can have it for an extra $2000. Engine, Transmission, and Performance Under the hood of every Telluride is a naturally aspirated V-6 that makes 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Its engine pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission that feeds the front wheels in the standard format—all-wheel drive is also optional across the board. The Telluride X-Line we tested sped to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds. However, the big Kia didn't feel as responsive to throttle inputs at lower speeds as did some of its turbocharged rivals. The Telluride's ride is on the firm side, with harsh pavement sometimes throwing the three-row SUV off its intended path. A self-leveling rear air suspension is also available. Brakes are excellent and the steering is precise with a nice heft to its feel. The Telluride boasts up to 8.4 inches of ground clearance for off-road excursions, and it can tow up to 5500 pounds. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo Regardless of people's opinion about the Telluride's bold outward appearance, its interior is undeniably upscale and comfortable. The build quality is excellent, the materials are attractive, and the desirable features are plentiful. The SX trim tops them all with the fanciest options, which include driver's seat memory settings, a head-up display, heated and ventilated rear seats, a premium headliner, and nappa leather upholstery. Because the Telluride is several inches longer than the seven-passenger Kia Sorento, its cabin is even more spacious, especially for those in the wayback seat. There is room for eight with a second-row bench seat or room for seven with the optional captain's chairs. Along with ample interior storage throughout the cabin, we managed to fit four carry-on suitcases behind its third row and stuffed a total of 35 carry-ons with both back rows folded flat. The two-row Sportage is spacious and is offered with a 187-hp four-cylinder engine that lacks significant kick. The more powerful Sportage Hybrid and PHEV, reviewed separately, mostly fix that gripe. Pricing and Which One to Buy LX: $28,415 EX: $30,415 X-Line: $33,215 SX: $33,915 SX-Prestige: $35,915 X-Pro: $37,415 X-Pro Prestige: $39,215 The midrange EX appears to offer the most value here, adding desirable features such as the larger 12.3-inch infotainment screen, wireless smartphone charging, and heated front seats. Engine, Transmission, and Performance The Sportage's default powertrain is a 187-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder that mates to an eight-speed automatic transmission and either front- or all-wheel drive. We sampled both the base four-cylinder and the hybrid powertrain during our initial test drive and were more satisfied with the latter than the former. At our test track, the nonhybrid Sportage needed 8.6 seconds to hit 60 mph versus only 7.4 seconds for the hybrid. The Sportage rides on a new platform with a longer wheelbase than the previous generation, and ride comfort is improved as a result. The introduction of rugged-looking trims such as the X-Line gives the compact ute an off-road vibe, but the X-Pro actually has some equipment to help tackle the rough stuff. It rides on black 17-inch rims and all-terrain tires and features a selection of drive modes. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo Inside, the Sportage makes an impression with a snazzy design highlighted by a huge digital display on the dashboard and other various eye-catching details. The interior is available in an attractive two-tone color scheme as an option, but if you prefer an all-black cabin that's available too. The center console boasts a rotary shift knob, a push-to-start button, and a myriad of other controls that blend into the piano-black bezel. Thanks to bigger dimensions overall as well as a longer wheelbase, the Sportage has more rear-seat legroom and 40 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back seat.
