Letting everyone know we are safe. The west Kelowna wild fire has claimed hundreds of homes and businesses. Looks like it may have claimed part of Camp Mewata, a Youth Camp my family has taken care of for over 40 years. But our house is safe, our property is safe so far. And most importantly my family is safe. Our hearts go out to all those who have lost and otherwise been effected by this fire. On a side note, the sprinklers on the cabin are not from city water, it is from our own water system and is not taking away from fire fighting efforts.

Officials in southern British Columbia said 174 properties were partially or totally damaged by the fires that raged for days in the Okanagan Valley threatening towns in the Kelowna area, a summer destination about 90 miles north of the U.S. border. (Timelapse video is from Aug. 18) More than 25,000 people in British Columbia have been under evacuation orders, with 37,000 more under alert to be ready to evacuate on short notice. HGTV’s ‘Love It or List It: Vancouver’ star Todd Talbot knows the devastation from British Columbia's wildfires first-hand after watching his family’s dream home in West Kelowna go up in flames on Friday. “We’re safe and staying with family in Calgary at the moment,” Talbot tells The Morning Show. “The thing that resonates the most with me is the outpouring of support and people sending messages,” he adds. “I could see at the beginning of the day, the smoke was intensifying behind our house and we were looking at (an) app (showing) where the fire was located. The smoke in the air was intense and that was what motivated me to suggest to Rebecca to take the kids somewhere else,” Talbot recounts. Two of the three wildfires that started on a destructive path through the Central Okanagan a week ago today are now classified as held. BC Wildfire’s Brad Litke said that the wildfires burning in Lake Country and Kelowna are now held, which means they are not likely to spread beyond predetermined boundaries under current conditions. It also means that area residents who remain on evacuation orders will be able to go home by the end of the day, Kelowna fire chief Travis Whiting said, noting it’s a long-awaited shift. The McDougall Creek wildfire, which burned through West Kelowna, Westbank First Nation, and North Westside neighbourhoods remains out of control and is measured at 12,318 hectares . The cause is still under investigation. Litke said the weather has been working in favour of firefighters in recent days but heading into the weekend, there will be a shift.
