BOOK You can buy our little book here, it helps to fund our research: 🤍 PATREON Please consider making a running donation here: 🤍 DESCRIPTION The Mursi live a traditional life in the African bush in southern Ethiopia. Popular with photographers and tourists because of their lip plates and patterned skins, their lives are in transition and their simple pastoralist economy is giving way to a dependency on tourism and money. Behind this, they are a wonderful people who hold one of the true gems of African Architecture which may give clues as to how people built temporary shelters many thousands of years ago. We managed to spend two weeks in their community recording a hut being built and catching some other moments of their lives immersed in the beautiful yet sometimes harsh world of nature. The huts are built from long branches taken fresh from a number of different shrubs found throughout the southern Omo region. These are bent to form a series of radial ribs which are reinforced with smaller curved arches, threaded with branched twigs and covered with a thick layer of thatch. Everything is held in place using an outer structure of split branches and bark rope. This was filmed in 2013, and has only taken us seven years to finally produce an edited version. MUSIC Music by Gordon Clarke except one from Melodyloops. Check our channel 'igloo' for more music. 🤍

This video is really special as it showcases the lifestyle of one of the Most dangerous tribes of the World (Mursi Tribe) at the Omo Valley in South Ethiopia as go to one of their villages in Omo Valley. Mursi tribe is one of the most isolated, richest, and dangerous tribes in Africa. The Mursi men have to fight with another Mursi Man with the help of a “Donga” and the fight continues until the other guy dies or gives up. Once the fight is over, the winner Mursi guy gets to choose the girl of his choice from the Mursi community, then the girl has to cut her lip for the guy as she puts this clay plate between her lips and then they get married. The bigger the plate, the more beautiful it is considered to be. In the this video, I’m giving the village chief who just won his Donga fight last week some antiseptics and bandage. Mursi people are known for killing many people including civilians and don’t usually accept anything from people not belonging to their community, but i was lucky. A trip to south western Ethiopia not to be forgotten nor for the faint of heart. These women are from the Mursi tribe located in Mago national park. They have a tradition which is optional to 15 year old girls of making their lips like this. This tradition has been described as caused by two possible senarios. First by the slave trade when the men wanted to make their women undesirable by deforming the women to make them unattractive to slave traders. The other scenario is that the men actually now find them most attractive when the women wear the larger lip plates. See my other video OMO VALLEY MURSI LIP PLATE ADORNMENT of Mursi women stretching their lips over the plates. . In this video the women are selling us their lip plates . Not so sure what to do with them when we got home .......... We camped next to their village and had fresh killed chicken, and goat cheese for dinner. They were very accommodating but I wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of them. Don't forget to" SUBSCRIBE" and check out my other videos of the Omo Valley Ethiopia.
The Mursi, as they refer to themselves, are a Nilotic pastoralist ethnic group in Ethiopia. The Mursi territory of around 2,000 km lies in the South Omo Zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples' Regional State , roughly between the Rivers Omo and Mago , close to the border with South Sudan. According to the 2007 national census, there are 12,000 Mursi, 848 of whom live in urban areas. Surrounded by mountains between the Omo River and its tributary the Mago, the home of the Mursi is one of the most isolated regions of the country. Due to the climate, they move twice a year between the winter and summer months. They herd cattle and grow crops along the banks of the Omo River. Their neighbors include the Banna, the Bodi, the Karo, the Kwegu, the Nyangatom and the Suri. They speak the Mursi language as a mother tongue and it is classified as Surmic, which is a branch of the Nilo-Saharan language family. Ceremonial dueling , a form of ritualised male violence, is a highly valued and popular activity of Mursi men, especially unmarried men, and a key marker of Mursi identity. Age sets are an important political feature, where men are formed into named "age sets" and pass through a number of "age grades" during the course of their lives; married women have the same age grade status as their husbands. why do women of the Mursi tribe wear large plates on their lips The men practice light scarification on their shoulders after killing an enemy, and shave geometric patterns on their head. During dances and ceremonies they adorn literally every part of their body with white chalk paint. Young unmarried men practice group stick fights. The winner is carried on top of poles to girls waiting beside the arena, who decide among themselves which of them will ask his hand in marriage. When a young Mursi girl reaches the age of 15 or 16, her lower lip is pierced so she can wear a lip plate. The larger the lip plate she can tolerate, the more cattle her bride price will bring for her father. The unique “ornament” of the face which they use, is absolutely unusual. The matter is that the lower lip of this tribe’s girls is cut in an early age. They begin to put into the lip the billets of wood, every time with the bigger and bigger diameter. Men of the Mursi also use white paint for their bodies and faces. Just like any other ethnic tribe in the lower valley, the men must pass a test before they can get married. A Mursi man is given a stick called a Donga and must face one opponent. The men then battle it out, beating each other with the sticks. The first fighter to submit loses and the winner is taken by a group of women to determine who he will marry. Men of the tribe also practice scarification. Like other tribes, this is the marking of an enemy killed by him. Life for the Mursi is often arduous and sometimes dangerous. But they have learnt to live well and there is much time for relaxation, chatting, music and gossip. They have a rich oral tradition through which they preserve and transmit their history, philosophical knowledge and moral stories. Religion and healing are very much interconnected for the Mursi. A knowledge of illness and of the divine emerges from people's experiences of the natural and social world. Priests provide the context for a healthy community and it is the priest as well as members of other lesser ritual families who are sought out to treat epidemics, drought, and crop pests. The Mursi also have a healing tradition based around the powers of women healers. The religion of the Mursi people is classified as Animism, although there is a Serving in Mission Station in the northeastern corner of Mursiland, which provides education and basic medical care. Kindly give the video a thumbs up. This is Lyadov and today in my travel vlog I`m in Ethiopia! I`m traveling to a very remote town called Jinka with a population of 30 000 people. [ENG] The Mursi are an ethnic group located in the southwest of Ethiopia, within the Mago national park, of animist tradition that still live in a primitive way. Men go half-naked, women dress in animal skins and wear a lipstick. Boncaulo is a Mursi who occasionally comes to the market of Jinka, a city that is two days away through the woods. Some inhabitants of the town take the opportunity to make orders that you write down carefully on paper. Boncaulo learned to read and write a few years ago and is one of the few Mursi who knows how to do it. Your trips have become a great help for your neighbors. The Mursi (or Mun as they refer to themselves)are a Surmic ethnic group in Ethiopia. They principally reside in the Debub Omo Zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Region, close to the border with South Sudan. According to the 2007 national census, there are 11,500 Mursi, 848 of whom live in urban areas; of the total number, 92.25% live in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Region (SNNPR) Surrounded by mountains between the Omo River and its tributary the Mago, the home of the Mursi is one of the most isolated regions of the country. Their neighbors include the Aari, the Banna, the Mekan, the Karo, the Kwegu, the Nyangatom and the Suri. They are grouped together with the Me'en and Suri by the Ethiopian government under the name Surma. Like many agro-pastoralists in East Africa, the Mursi experience a force greater than themselves, which they call Tumwi. This is usually located in the Sky, although sometimes Tumwi manifests itself as a thing of the sky (ahi a tumwin), such as a rainbow or a bird. The principal religious and ritual office in the society is that of the Kômoru, the Priest or Shaman. This is an inherited office, unlike the more informal political role of the Jalaba. The Kômoru embodies in his person the well-being of the group as a whole and acts as a means of communication between the community and the god (Tumwi), especially when it is threatened by such events as drought, crop pests and disease. His role is characterized by the performance of public rituals to bring rain, to protect men, cattle and crops from disease, and to ward off threatened attacks from other tribes. Ideally, in order to preserve this link between the people and the Tumwi, the Kômoru should not leave Mursiland or even his local group (bhuran). One clan in particular, Komortê, is considered to be, par excellence, the priestly clan, but there are priestly families in two other clans, namely Garikuli and Bumai. The religion of the Mursi people is classified as Animism,[citation needed] although some Mursi have adopted Christianity. There is a Serving in Mission Station in the northeastern corner of Mursiland, which provides education, basic medical care and instruction in Christianity.

The Mursi Tribe lives in the Lower Omo Valley, with a territory spanning roughly between the Omo River and the Mago River. The language spoken by the Mursi is the Mursi language, which is a Surmic branch of the Nilo-Saharan language family. The Mursi people are pastoralists, raising cattle for their meat and milk. In addition, they also grow sorghum, corn, and other crops. A famous characteristic of the Mursi people is the lip-plates worn by the women - which symbolises the connection between them and the society they live in. Girls have their lips cut at the age of 15 or 16, and bigger and bigger clay plates are added over the years to cause the lips to expand. Another famous characteristic of the Mursi is the ceremonial duels by young men who fight to impress unmarried girls. Currently, the Mursi way of life is under threat from land eviction and irrigation projects. Please do support causes that protect the rights of these indigenous people, and others who live in the Omo Valley of Ethiopia. Thank you for watching this cultural experience on FlightTravels. When a man from the surma tribe in Ethiopia, is looking for a wife, he doesn’t look for the common things that you’d look for in a modern woman And when it comes to the women of surma tribe, wearing a lip plate is a symbol of great beauty that takes them to extreme lengths just to get one, because getting a lip plate this big is an extremely painful process as you can imagine. But to them, it doesn’t matter because it makes them beautiful in the eyes of their men. For the young men it’s not just the cows alone they’ll have to give when it comes to marriage, they’ll have to prove themselves to be warriors in order to draw the attention of the girls and this is through the donga stick fighting.
